About This Small Space Renovation

This yard sits behind a multi-family building in East Boston. When we started, weeds and vines had taken over the lot. We cleared it and rebuilt the space with garden beds near the building and an artificial turf lawn at the back.

The tree beside the shed was a tree of heaven, an invasive species and the preferred host of the spotted lanternfly. It shaded most of the yard. Goldenrod and vines covered the old timber garden beds, and moss filled the joints of the brick paver path.

What we built on this East Boston Property

Everything is designed to improve usability of the outdoor space and is economically installed for low maintenance.

Removed the tree of heaven and cleared the overgrowth from the lot.

Renovated the timber raised garden beds around the patio.

Installed artificial turf at the back of the yard — the same as what the Patriots play on — edged with curved mulch beds.

Planted upright junipers and other evergreens along the chain-link fence for screening & planted one young tree in the timber beds near the building.
