Professional Stump Grinding & Remediation
ISA-Certified Arboriculture Expertise Serving the North Shore
What is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding is a professional arboriculture process that uses a high-speed, rotating carbide-tipped disk to mechanically shave a tree stump into small wood chips. Unlike full excavation, this method surgically targets the stump and immediate root flare to neutralize them below the soil surface. At Leahy Landscaping, our ISA-certified arborists utilize this method to eliminate hazards without the environmental impact of traditional tree removal.
How the Process Works
- Preparation: The area is cleared of rocks and debris to protect the machine's cutting teeth.
- The Grind: Specialized machinery—from "handlebar" units to heavy-duty tow-behinds—is used for precision.
- Depth: Grinding typically occurs 6 to 12 inches below grade.
- Remediation: Using the BarkTech Express Blower, chips are removed and the site is backfilled.
Can You Plant a New Tree?
Yes, but successful establishment requires "Senior-level" preparation:
- Wait and Prep: Wait at least one year for the old root system to begin decomposing naturally.
- Soil Remediation: We utilize custom-blended soils from North Shore Compost to restore nutrient balance.
- The "Offset" Rule: Plant new trees at least 3 to 5 feet away from the original site for ample rooting space.
Stump Removal vs. Stump Grinding:
Which Do You Need?
Stump Grinding
The most popular and cost-effective choice. We use high-speed disks to turn the stump into mulch. It’s fast, efficient, and minimally invasive.
Stump Removal (Excavation)
Necessary for commercial land clearing or if you are installing a foundation where a tree once stood. This involves pulling the entire root ball from the earth.
